Indentation responses of pressurized ellipsoidal and cylindrical elastic shells: Insights from shallow-shell theory

Pressurized elastic shells are ubiquitous in nature and technology, from the outer walls of yeast bacterial cells to artificial pressure vessels. Indentation measurements simultaneously probe internal properties thin shells, serve as a useful tool for strength testing inferring biological functions living cells. We study effects geometry pressure-induced stress on indentation stiffness ellipsoidal cylindrical using shallow-shell theory. show that linear response reduces single integral with two dimensionless parameters encode asphericity pressure. This can be numerically evaluated all regimes is used generate compact analytical expressions various technological importance. Our results provide theoretical support previous scaling numerical describing ellipsoids, reveal new scale dictates large-pressure response, give insights pressurized cylinders.
